PhD Student Positions (2) – Population and Spatial Ecology of Great Lakes Wolves
The Camp Fire Program in Wildlife Conservation (www.campfirewildlife.com) at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) seeks 2 outstanding PhD students beginning August 2020.
The recovery of gray wolves in the western Great Lakes is an outcome of the strong collaboration among agencies and organizations in this region. Working with federal, state, provincial, and tribal partners across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ontario, the overall goals of this project are to develop a regional integrated population model and to determine the distributional range limits of wolves in this region.
One student will be expected to develop a research proposal within the overall framework of regional wolf population ecology, including aspects of dispersal and immigration, survival and cause-specific mortality, and reproduction. The second student would develop a proposal emphasizing regional spatial and movement ecology such as the quantification of drivers of pack and territory size, how anthropogenic activities and landscape matrices influence movements and dispersal, and the role of conspecifics in shaping space use.
The academic home for these positions is at SUNY ESF in Syracuse, New York. The positions are 4 years in duration; the first 3 years students will be on teaching assistantships during the academic year with the fourth year funded through research assistantships.
- MS in Wildlife Ecology, Conservation Biology, or closely related field, with a strong academic record.
- Excellent quantitative skills and ecological knowledge related to the positions. Proficiency in R and ArcGIS software is required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills including demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Strong ability to work in a team-oriented environment with external collaborators, excellent work ethic, and good sense of humor.
~$25,000 annual salary plus tuition and benefits.
